I took a visitor down to the industrial district last night for a classic French dinner at Church & State. Escargots de Bourgogne en Croute (escargots in puff pastry) & Moelle de Boeuf (roasted bone marrow) for appetizers. Bouillabaisse and Salade Nicoise with a side of Gratin de Macaronis et Fromage for the main course. Chocolat tarte for dessert. It was all very good and I was proud of myself for trying bone marrow, although I would not order it again. I enjoyed the escargot but my favorites were the macaroni and cheese and the chocolate tarte with a caramel drizzle. The service was very French (i.e. not great) but an enjoyable meal nonetheless. Confirmed my reservations for Spago, Picca, and The Gorbals

Reading: Let The Great World Spin by Cokum McCann and a National Book Award Winner.
Watching: The French Open. The year’s second Grand Slam began May 22 and No. 1 Rafael Nadal already survived a scare from American John Isner in the first round. SI has great coverage.
Listening to: Lady Gaga’s newest album. Between the 99 cent download and her SNL performance, she’s impossible to escape.
Eating: The Aphrodite from Gusto Pizza Co. in Des Moines. Great, inventive pizza with good service in a fast-casual environment. May take over Big Tomato as the best pizza place on Ingersoll.
